12 Slimming Ingredients that you may not be using

Hello to all,

It has been some time since I last posted and I wanted to share these ingredients in case you are looking to add some other "interesting items" to your daily intake.

1.  Almond Milk-  if you have not tried it your really should!  It can be purchased here in Richmond at Kroger.  Don't bother looking for it at Martins b/c they do not carry it and when I asked a manager if they could carry it for us health nuts he told me it was not likely they would ever carry it.  Not the answer I was looking for so needless to say my shopping is now mostly at Kroger b/c they have what I want/need.  You can buy the unsweetened for about 35 calories a serving.  Not at all a horrible calorie cost and it has a great taste to boot!

2.  Baby food fruit-  I know you are probably thinking WHAT? but it is true.  You have heard of using applesauce for baking which cuts down on your calories, well pureed fruits can do the same!  You can save a lot of calories by replacing butters and oils.  Holiday ideas for saving calories but not sacrificing taste!

3.  Chestnuts-  The have less fat and calories than regular nuts, they are mostly water.  Use them in holiday stuffing's, salads, or as snacks.  You want to buy pre-rosted and peeled chestnuts, to save prep time.

4.  Evaporated fat free milk-  there is no shame in replacing this low fat/no fat version of evap milk in all of your favorite full fat evaporated baking or cooking recipes.  You do not lose flavor just kick some calories off your plate!

5.  Flavored extracts-  You can beef up flavor in your desserts while cutting back on sugars buy adding vanilla, almond, coconut or coffee extracts.  Again think of a smart way to cut calories not taste.

6.  Greek Yogurt- one of my favorite additions to any good recipe. You get a ton of protein minus all the sugar of American made yogurts.  It is very rich and creamy, even the no fat Greek yogurts and helps to thicken pie fillings, puddings or even smashed veggies.

7.  Hot Sauces and Salsa- these both add a ton of flavor without a ton of calories.  You can make your own or get the store bought.  Just be careful about hidden added sugar in your hot sauce.  They try to hide sugar in anything they can now a days!

8.  Lean meats- always a top choice. Be careful when reading labels b/c some beef is leaner than turkey depending on the % of fat.  One must be careful when shopping b/c calories count!

9.  Nippy Cheeses-  I love, LOVE, love cheese.... did I mention I LOVE CHEESE!!!  Using a stronger tasting cheese can help reduce calories b/c you will use less in your cooking to get the same great taste.  Blue, aged Swiss, and extra sharp cheddar are great choices.

10.  Turkey Breast- if you are cooking for a smaller crowd take a few skinless turkey breasts and cook them.  The white meat of the breasts offer less calories and fat than the turkey's darker meat.  Calories are also cut when they are skinless.  Make sure you cook or broil them, no frying!

11.  Whole grain or even better Ezekiel bread (you can find this at whole foods, Ellwood Thompsons, and Fresh Market in Richmond, VA)-  get additional fiber and good stuff out of whole grain and Ezekiel breads.  E breads are an even better choice than whole grain b/c you do get your fiber but you also get complete protein products, gluten free products (b/c some people are really sensitive to gluten), and so much more I cannot even go into it all but you can read all about it here....http://www.foodforlife.com/product-catalog/ezekiel-49/breads/120C6-organic-sprouted-whole-grain-flourless-bread

12.  Yukon Gold Potatoes-  These guys mash up really well and with a little touch of milk, no butter really needed, they turn out beautifully!
